COURSE CURRICULUM

The MRes in Cardiovascular Science offers a robust combination of taught modules and practical research training to prepare students for careers in cardiovascular research. Core modules cover essential knowledge and skills, including the methods used to translate laboratory findings into clinical applications, often referred to as bench-to-bedside research. Students gain a comprehensive understanding of cardiovascular physiology and pharmacology, learning how diseases affect the heart and blood vessels and how interventions can be designed and evaluated. The program also emphasizes research methodology, with modules on the fundamentals of applied health research and quantitative methods, equipping students to design studies, analyse complex data, and interpret results accurately. This theoretical grounding is complemented by hands-on experience through two substantial 11-week research projects, allowing students to explore different areas of cardiovascular science in depth, including molecular, cellular, and clinical aspects. Taught by a combination of clinical and non-clinical experts at a leading cardiovascular research centre, students are exposed to the latest experimental techniques and real-world translational research approaches. By integrating rigorous academic training with practical, research-led experience, the program develops students’ technical skills, critical thinking, and ability to communicate complex scientific findings, preparing them for careers in academic research, clinical translation, or advanced postgraduate study.
