COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in International Security Studies combines rigorous theoretical study with independent research to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of contemporary global security challenges. The core module, International Security, offers an in-depth exploration of the main theoretical and conceptual approaches to the study of international security, focusing on developments since the end of the Cold War. Students examine a wide range of contemporary security issues, including the emergence of stable peace in Europe, the violent breakup of Yugoslavia, 'New Wars' in the Global South, terrorism, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, the Iraq War, and ongoing conflicts and peace prospects in the Middle East. This module equips students with analytical tools to critically assess the causes and consequences of security threats, understand the roles of state and non-state actors, and evaluate policy responses to complex international problems. Complementing the core module, the MA Dissertation allows students to pursue an independent research project on a topic of their choosing, applying both theoretical frameworks and empirical analysis to address real-world security issues. Together, the core module and dissertation develop advanced research, analytical, and communication skills, preparing graduates for careers in government, international organisations, security agencies, consultancy, and research, and equipping them to engage thoughtfully and creatively with the challenges of contemporary international security.
