COURSE CURRICULUM

The core modules of the History MA provide a strong foundation in research skills and independent scholarly work, ensuring students develop the expertise necessary to undertake advanced historical study. Historical Research, Historical Writing equips students with essential methodological skills, including critical engagement with primary and secondary sources, evaluation of historical evidence, and the ability to construct coherent, well-argued academic narratives. This module emphasizes the development of analytical thinking and advanced writing skills, preparing students to approach complex historical questions with rigor and intellectual confidence. Complementing this, the Dissertation module allows students to undertake an extended, independently conducted research project under the guidance of a specialist academic supervisor. Through the dissertation, students apply their methodological knowledge and research skills to a specific historical topic of their choice, producing original scholarship that demonstrates their ability to analyse sources, construct arguments, and contribute to historical knowledge. Together, these core modules provide a structured yet flexible framework for developing both theoretical understanding and practical research competence. The combination of methodological training and independent study ensures that graduates are well-prepared for careers in research, education, heritage, public history, and related fields, as well as for further postgraduate study, including doctoral-level research.
