COURSE CURRICULUM

The core modules of the History MA in Urban History provide students with a strong foundation in historical research, analysis, and the study of cities across time and space. Historical Research, Historical Writing introduces essential skills for independent scholarly work, including critical analysis, engagement with primary and secondary sources, and advanced academic writing, enabling students to produce well-structured, evidence-based arguments. The City in History module explores the development of urban centres from a historical perspective, examining how social, cultural, economic, and political factors have shaped towns and cities over time. Students investigate urban communities, architecture, townscapes, and the interactions between populations and their environments, developing a nuanced understanding of the complexity of urban life. Global Cities: the View from Asia expands the scope of study beyond Europe, allowing students to analyse urbanisation and city development in Asian contexts, considering historical processes, cultural influences, and economic transformations. This comparative approach encourages reflection on similarities and differences between urban experiences worldwide and fosters a global perspective on urban history. Together, these core modules equip students with research expertise, analytical skills, and critical perspectives necessary to examine urban histories, understand the evolution of cities, and pursue further academic research or professional careers in heritage, public history, and urban studies.
