COURSE CURRICULUM

The Software Engineering BSc at Leicester provides a comprehensive education in both the theoretical and practical aspects of software development. In the first year, students build a solid foundation in programming, learning Python and Java, as well as software development environments such as Eclipse. Core topics include computing fundamentals, algorithms, data structures, computer architecture, object-oriented programming, software lifecycle, and quality, alongside personal and professional development skills. The second year deepens technical expertise and introduces students to operating systems, networks, user interface design, human-computer interaction, information security, databases, and software architecture. Students also participate in a group software engineering project, often commissioned by a real client, giving practical experience in teamwork, project management, and professional communication. Optional modules allow for early exploration in areas such as data analytics, foundations of artificial intelligence, or computation. In the final year, students specialise in areas that align with their interests and career goals, undertaking a substantial individual project with one-to-one supervision. Core modules include mobile and web application development, generative development, and professional issues in computing. Additional optional modules cover advanced topics such as C++ programming, internet and cloud computing, data science, AI, cryptography, deep learning, and algorithm design.
