COURSE CURRICULUM

The Physics BSc at Leicester offers a structured and comprehensive program that develops students’ understanding of the fundamental principles governing matter, energy, and the universe. In the first year, students gain a solid foundation in core topics such as mechanics, electricity and magnetism, waves, quantum phenomena, and mathematical physics, alongside practical laboratory skills and professional development. They also have the opportunity to explore interdisciplinary subjects such as astrophysics, climate science, space science, and data science through optional modules. The second year builds on this foundation with more advanced study in relativity, quantum physics, particle physics, electromagnetic fields, thermal and statistical physics, and condensed matter physics, while continuing practical and professional development. Optional modules allow students to further explore areas like intermediate astrophysics, climate, data, and space science. In the final year, students engage with higher-level physics including quantum mechanics, radiation, and matter, and undertake a substantial research project to develop independent investigative skills. Additional optional modules enable specialisation in areas such as astrodynamics, electronics, medical physics, cosmology, climate impacts, particle physics, and planetary science. Across all three years, the course emphasizes analytical thinking, computational proficiency, experimental expertise, and professional skills, preparing graduates for careers in research, industry, education, and technology.
