COURSE CURRICULUM

The Physics with Data Science BSc at the University of Leicester integrates the study of fundamental physics with data science, equipping students with the skills to analyse and interpret complex datasets in scientific and industrial contexts. In the first year, students build a solid foundation in mechanics, electricity and magnetism, waves, light and matter, and mathematical physics, alongside experimental skills and professional development. Optional modules introduce data science alongside astrophysics, climate science, or space science, providing early interdisciplinary exposure. The second year expands core physics knowledge with modules in relativity, quantum physics, electromagnetic fields, thermal and statistical physics, and condensed matter, while further developing experimental and analytical skills. Students select optional modules focused on data science applied to astrophysics, space science, or climate science, enhancing programming, modelling, and computational expertise. In the final year, students undertake advanced modules in quantum mechanics, radiation and matter, and the physics challenge, alongside a substantial research project where they apply data science techniques to solve physics problems. Additional optional modules allow specialisation in programming, computational physics, industry projects, astrodynamics, or environmental applications. Graduates leave with strong competencies in physics, data analysis, computational modelling, and research, preparing them for careers in scientific research, high-performance computing, data science, and analytical roles across academia and industry.
