COURSE CURRICULUM

The Physics with Climate Science BSc at the University of Leicester integrates fundamental physics with the study of climate systems, enabling students to understand the physical processes driving atmospheric, oceanic, and terrestrial interactions, as well as human and natural impacts on the environment. In the first year, students develop core physics knowledge through modules in mechanics, electricity and magnetism, waves, light and matter, and mathematical methods, while gaining practical and professional skills in experimental physics. Optional modules introduce climate science alongside astrophysics or data science, fostering interdisciplinary learning. The second year builds on this foundation, covering advanced topics such as relativity, quantum physics, electromagnetic fields, thermal and statistical physics, and condensed matter, while continuing to develop research, analytical, and experimental skills. Climate science-focused optional modules allow students to explore the behaviour of the atmosphere and oceans, environmental monitoring, and climate modelling. The final year emphasises independent research and advanced problem-solving, with core modules including quantum mechanics, radiation and matter, the physics challenge, and a research project. Students also study climate change impacts, vulnerability, and adaptation, and can choose optional modules in computational and applied physics areas such as numerical programming, industry projects, and planetary or stellar physics. The course equips graduates for careers in climate research, environmental consultancy, data science, and scientific innovation.
