The Physics with Astrophysics BSc at Leicester offers a rigorous and integrated program combining core physics principles with the study of astrophysical phenomena, providing students with a broad understanding of the universe from subatomic particles to cosmic structures. In the first year, students establish a solid foundation in mechanics, electricity and magnetism, waves, quantum physics, light and matter, alongside mathematical methods and experimental skills. Optional modules introduce astrophysics alongside climate science, data science, or space science, offering an early interdisciplinary perspective. The second year builds on this foundation with advanced physics modules in relativity, quantum physics and particles, electromagnetic fields, thermal and statistical physics, and condensed matter, alongside further development of professional and experimental skills. Intermediate astrophysics modules allow students to explore stellar, galactic, and planetary phenomena while applying computational and analytical techniques. In the final year, students consolidate their physics knowledge through advanced modules in quantum mechanics, radiation and matter, and undertake a research project, developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and independent research skills. Astrophysics is further explored through core modules such as quasars and cosmology, with optional modules in astrodynamics, electronics, computational programming, and industry-focused projects allowing tailored specialisation.
