COURSE CURRICULUM

The Physical Geography and Geology BSc combines the study of Earth’s past and present to provide a comprehensive understanding of its systems and processes. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge of Earth’s structure, composition, and tectonic processes, alongside weather and climate systems. Practical skills, including geological mapping and fieldwork, are developed through workshops, labs, tutorials, and a residential field trip to Arran, applying theoretical learning in real-world contexts. Modules cover palaeobiology, stratigraphy, Earth system processes, and digital skills for geographers. In the second year, the focus shifts to analytical and research skills, exploring contemporary Earth surface processes, the sedimentary and fossil record, geochemistry, and magmatic and metamorphic processes. Students undertake a residential field course in Almeria, Spain, gaining practical experience in landscape analysis, project design, and teamwork. Core and optional modules deepen understanding of climate change, catchment systems, and depositional processes, preparing students for advanced study. The final year emphasizes independent research and specialisation, with a dissertation and a selection of optional modules covering topics such as environmental geoscience, crustal dynamics, volcanology, planetary science, remote sensing, and water quality management. Throughout the program, students acquire transferable skills in critical thinking, data analysis, research design, and communication, equipping them for careers in geoscience, environmental management, and related disciplines.
