COURSE CURRICULUM

The Operating Department Practice BSc is structured to progressively develop the knowledge, skills, and professional competence required to work as an Operating Department Practitioner. In the first year, students build a solid foundation in the core principles of the role, focusing on surgical and anaesthetic practice, alongside the essential skills needed for safe and effective patient care. Modules cover the fundamentals of operating department practice, surgical and anaesthetic procedures, professional practice in healthcare, and the development of clinical skills and reflective practice. In the second year, students expand their expertise into clinical specialties, gaining practical experience in post-anaesthetic care, critical care, obstetric and emergency settings, and non-elective procedures. This stage emphasizes the application of transferrable skills in real-world scenarios and the continued development of professional and practice-focused competencies. The final year focuses on enhanced practice, leadership, and management, allowing students to refine advanced clinical skills, take responsibility for patient care, and undertake a major project that demonstrates their ability to integrate knowledge and practice. Throughout the program, students develop critical thinking, teamwork, and communication skills, preparing them for a highly responsible role in multidisciplinary healthcare teams and equipping them to provide high-quality patient care in surgical and anaesthetic settings.
