COURSE CURRICULUM

The Medical Physiology BSc at the University of Leicester provides a structured progression from foundational biomedical sciences to advanced study of human physiological systems. In the first year, shared across all Medical Sciences programs, students develop essential knowledge and skills through modules covering biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, microbiology, genetics, physiology, pharmacology, and neuroscience, alongside an introduction to medical bioscience. This establishes a firm basis for later specialisation. In the second year, students build on these foundations with core modules in pathophysiology, exercise physiology, pharmacology, and the physiology of excitable cells, while having the flexibility to select optional modules such as genomics, microbiology, protein structure, bioinformatics, neurobiology, and contemporary techniques in biological data analysis. The curriculum emphasizes both theoretical understanding and practical research skills through dedicated research modules. In the final year, students focus on advanced topics including current and future therapeutics and have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of options in molecular and cellular pharmacology, neuroscience, neurobiology, immunology, genetics, and microbial biotechnology. Research projects form a central component, allowing in-depth exploration of specific physiological questions. Graduates gain a comprehensive understanding of human physiology, experimental and analytical skills, and transferable skills in scientific reasoning, communication, and teamwork, preparing them for careers in biomedical research, healthcare, or related life sciences fields.
