COURSE CURRICULUM

The Medical Genetics BSc at the University of Leicester provides an in-depth study of genetics, molecular biology, and their applications to medicine. In the first year, students gain a strong foundation in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, microbiology, genetics, physiology, pharmacology, neuroscience, and medical bioscience, building essential knowledge for understanding human health and disease. In the second year, the focus shifts to core topics such as current issues in medical genetics, genomes, gene expression, inheritance, bioinformatics, and research skills, while students can choose optional modules in areas including microbiology, protein function, physiology, neurobiology, and computational biology. This combination develops both practical laboratory techniques and analytical skills necessary for interpreting complex genetic data. The final year emphasizes advanced study in human genetics, medical genetics, microbial pathogenesis, and evolutionary genetics, alongside an extensive research project that allows students to apply their knowledge to a specific area of interest. Additional optional modules cover topics such as cancer biology, neuroscience, physiology, microbiology, and sustainability in science.
