COURSE CURRICULUM

The Medical Biochemistry BSc at the University of Leicester provides a structured and progressive study of biochemistry with a focus on medical applications. In the first year, students are introduced to the molecular and cellular foundations of life, covering topics such as biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, microbiology, genetics, physiology, pharmacology, and neuroscience. This provides a broad scientific grounding and understanding of how biological systems operate at multiple levels. The second year builds on this foundation, emphasizing biochemical approaches to therapeutic development, molecular cell biology, protein structure and function, and research skills. Students can tailor their learning through optional modules, including genomics, immunology, microbiology, neurobiology, and bioinformatics, allowing for specialization and practical skill development in emerging scientific areas. The final year focuses on advanced topics, including gene expression, the molecular basis of human disease, and biochemical mechanisms of disease, with further flexibility to explore specialized areas such as structural biology, molecular pharmacology, neuroscience, cancer biology, microbial genomics, and experimental research projects. Students engage in substantial research projects, gaining hands-on laboratory experience and developing critical analytical and problem-solving skills. Across all three years, the course emphasizes the integration of theoretical knowledge with practical application, preparing graduates for careers in biomedical research, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and related scientific disciplines.
