COURSE CURRICULUM

The Geology with Palaeontology BSc offers a strong foundation in geoscience while developing specialist expertise in the history of life on Earth. In the first year, students are introduced to core geological concepts through modules on Earth system evolution, palaeobiology, natural resources, geological mapping, planetary structure and dynamic processes, alongside an introductory field course. The second year deepens understanding of key geological processes, including magmatic and metamorphic systems, depositional environments, geochemistry, tectonics and climate impacts. A dedicated module on major evolutionary events begins the pathway toward palaeontological specialisation, supported by intensive fieldwork and stratigraphic training. In the final year, the focus shifts strongly to palaeobiology, with advanced study of vertebrate evolution and hands-on training in microfossil analysis. Students complete both an independent field-based project and a dissertation, allowing them to investigate specific geological or palaeontological questions. Optional modules enable further specialisation in areas such as environmental geoscience, crustal dynamics, planetary science, mineral exploration, volcanology, isotope analysis or water quality. This structure equips students with strong field, laboratory and analytical skills, preparing them for careers in palaeontology, geoscience, museum and heritage sectors, environmental consultancy and research.
