COURSE CURRICULUM

The Geography BSc provides a comprehensive scientific understanding of Earth’s physical systems, beginning with a first year that introduces both physical and human geography. Students build essential skills through modules on global human geography, Earth system evolution, society–environment interactions, GIS, digital technologies and field and laboratory techniques. In the second year, the focus shifts toward key physical geography themes such as geomorphology, climate change, biogeography and environmental data analysis. Core modules cover climate impacts and adaptation, research design, GIScience and an overseas field course, while optional modules allow exploration of catchment systems, biosphere dynamics, development–environment relationships, or past climate changes. The final year combines advanced teaching with independent research, beginning with the development of a dissertation project. Students choose from a wide selection of research-led optional modules that support both specialism and breadth. These include environmental challenges, digital geographies, rainforest environments, ancient ecosystems, and sustainability projects, along with technical modules such as remote sensing, information visualisation, stable isotope analysis, dryland environments, water quality, and volcanology. This structure equips students with strong analytical, field, laboratory and research skills, preparing them for scientific careers addressing environmental change and Earth system processes.
