COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc in Criminology at Leicester provides students with a structured and comprehensive exploration of crime, criminal justice, and the social and cultural factors that shape criminal behaviour. In the first year, students build a foundational understanding of criminology through modules such as Introduction to Criminology, Criminal Justice in Action, Victims of Crime, and Theories of Crime and Criminality, developing analytical and critical thinking skills while examining key concepts and debates. In the second year, the course deepens this understanding with core modules in Punishment and Rehabilitation and Criminological Research Methods, which equip students with the skills needed to conduct rigorous research. Students also choose from optional modules covering contemporary topics such as Organised Crime, Youth Crime, Terrorism, Sex and Violence, and Criminal Investigations, allowing them to tailor their learning to specific interests. The final year focuses on independent research through Preparing for Your Research Project and the Student Research Project, providing hands-on experience in designing, executing, and presenting research. Additional optional modules in areas such as Violence, Hate Crime, Gender and Crime, Forensic Science, Green Criminology, and Understanding Extremism enable students to specialise further. Overall, the program develops critical, analytical, and research skills, preparing graduates for careers in law enforcement, criminal justice, social research, policy development, and related fields, as well as postgraduate study.
