COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biological Sciences BSc is structured to provide a broad and flexible foundation in biology while allowing students to develop specialized knowledge and research skills. In the first year, students study core modules across biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, neuroscience, physiology, and zoology, gaining an understanding of fundamental biological principles and discovering areas of personal interest. Modules cover topics such as molecular and cell biology, genetics, physiology, pharmacology, neuroscience, and biodiversity and behaviour. In the second year, students undertake core research skills modules and choose from a wide range of optional modules to tailor their learning to their interests. Options include genomics, microbiology, physiology and pharmacology, exercise physiology, bioinformatics, neurobiology, molecular cell biology, and evolutionary biology, providing both theoretical understanding and practical experience. The final year emphasizes advanced study and independent research, with students selecting modules across molecular and cellular biology, genetics, neuroscience, immunology, pharmacology, conservation, and biodiversity. Students also undertake major research projects, which develop analytical, experimental, and problem-solving skills. Overall, the program integrates interdisciplinary learning, practical training, and research experience, equipping graduates with the knowledge, technical competence, and transferable skills required for careers in biomedical research, biotechnology, healthcare, conservation, or further postgraduate study in the biological sciences.
