COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biological Sciences (Genetics) BSc at Leicester provides a comprehensive understanding of genetics and its applications across human health, biotechnology, and the environment. In the first year, students study foundational topics including biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, microbiology, neuroscience, physiology, and zoology, gaining a broad understanding of the principles underlying all biological systems. This foundation allows students to identify their areas of interest and prepare for more specialised study in the second year. The second year develops practical and research skills through modules on genomes, bioinformatics, genes, development and inheritance, molecular cell biology, and contemporary laboratory techniques. Students also choose optional modules in areas such as protein structure, physiology, microbiology, and neurobiology, enabling them to tailor their learning towards specific career goals. In the final year, students engage with advanced topics in evolutionary genetics, human genetics, and other specialised areas including microbial pathogenesis, cancer biology, conservation genetics, neuroscience, and behavioural ecology. A major research project, whether analytical, experimental, or education-focused, allows students to apply their knowledge independently, developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and laboratory skills. Graduates leave equipped for careers in genetics, biotechnology, healthcare, research, or further study in the biological sciences, with strong analytical and practical expertise.
