COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biological Sciences (Biochemistry) BSc at Leicester provides a comprehensive understanding of the molecular and cellular foundations of life, combining theoretical knowledge with practical laboratory experience. In the first year, students study a broad range of biological sciences, including biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, neuroscience, physiology, and zoology, gaining a foundation that allows them to identify their areas of interest. Core modules cover molecules of life, cell biology, genetics, physiology, and biodiversity, providing essential grounding for advanced study. In the second year, students deepen their understanding of molecular cell biology, protein structure and function, and gene expression, alongside research skills and optional modules in areas such as microbiology, neurobiology, bioinformatics, physiology, and conservation. Practical experience and data analysis techniques are emphasized to develop laboratory competence and scientific reasoning. In the final year, students focus on advanced topics including structural biology, cancer cell and molecular biology, and the molecular basis of gene expression, with opportunities for substantial independent research projects. Additional options allow specialization in areas such as microbial pathogenesis, neuroscience, physiology, behaviour, conservation, and astrobiology. The course equips graduates with strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills, preparing them for careers in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, research, or further postgraduate study in the life sciences.
