COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mechanical Engineering BEng program at the University of Leicester provides students with a thorough grounding in core engineering principles during the first year, shared with other engineering disciplines including aerospace, biomedical, electrical and electronic, and general engineering. This foundation includes sustainable engineering design, engineering mathematics with programming, solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and heat transfer, principles of electrical engineering, and digital electronics and communications, giving students the flexibility to switch between engineering degrees before their second year. In the second year, students begin to specialise in mechanical engineering while continuing to strengthen fundamental engineering skills. They engage in an integrated engineering design project, collaborating with peers from other disciplines, and study system dynamics and control, engineering management and business simulation, materials and structures, fluid dynamics and aerodynamics, dynamics and vibrations, materials processing, and applied engineering thermodynamics. In the final year, students further specialise through optional modules tailored to different aspects of mechanical engineering, including finite element analysis and design, heat transfer and energy systems, state variable control, tribology in engineering design, and rigid body and structural dynamics. The individual project in the final year allows students to investigate a specific mechanical engineering problem, providing practical experience and preparing them for professional careers in industry, research, and technological innovation.
