COURSE CURRICULUM

The BEng in Biomedical Engineering is designed to provide a solid foundation in engineering principles while integrating knowledge of human biology to prepare students for careers in medical technology and healthcare innovation. In the first year, students follow a shared curriculum with other engineering disciplines, covering core topics such as sustainable engineering design, digital electronics and communications, electrical engineering principles, solid and fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and engineering mathematics with programming. This broad foundation allows students to switch between engineering specialisms before the second year. In the second year, students build on this foundation with core modules in system dynamics and control, integrated engineering design, anatomy and physiology for engineers, engineering management, fundamentals of biomedical engineering, biomaterials, and computational engineering methods. Students also choose from optional modules including mechatronics, embedded systems, or analogue electronics to tailor their learning. The final year emphasizes advanced study and practical application, with core modules in medical devices and prosthetics, biological imaging, biofluid mechanics, biomechanics, computational biology, and an individual research project. Optional modules in digital control, actuators, or machine learning allow further specialization. Throughout the degree, students gain theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and research experience, preparing them to design innovative medical devices and rehabilitation technologies, work in healthcare technology, or pursue advanced study in biomedical engineering and related fields.
