COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sociology BA at Leicester provides a comprehensive understanding of social life, combining theoretical knowledge with practical research skills. In the first year, students build a solid foundation through core modules covering sociology in practice, power, privilege and diversity, race and ethnicity in Britain, society in transformation, key texts, and research methods. This grounding introduces students to both substantive social issues and essential analytical approaches. In the second year, students gain greater flexibility to shape their learning, undertaking core modules in qualitative research, quantitative methods, sociological theory, and workplace applications while choosing option modules such as gender and society, youth and young adulthood, sociology through literature and film, or environmental sociologies. This allows students to explore areas aligned with their interests and career goals. The final year emphasizes independent research, enabling students to carry out a supervised dissertation or research project in a chosen area, while continuing to expand their knowledge through modules like modern sociological theory and social research methods. Option modules include topics such as social psychology, body and society, football and society, drugs and society, sociology of health and illness, international migration, and green criminology. The program combines critical thinking, methodological rigor, and real-world application, equipping graduates with the analytical, research, and communication skills necessary for a range of careers in the social sciences, public sector, and beyond.
