COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Sociology with Criminology at Leicester provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the social and criminal dimensions of society. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in sociology and criminology, exploring theoretical approaches, key concepts in crime and criminality, practical sociological methods, and critical engagement with texts. The focus is on understanding how social structures, power, and inequality influence behaviours and the criminal justice system. In the second year, students begin to specialise, developing practical research skills through qualitative and quantitative methods, while studying modules on punishment, rehabilitation, and contemporary sociological issues. They also have the flexibility to choose from option modules such as terrorism, sex and violence, criminology in media, and criminal investigations, allowing them to tailor their learning to specific interests. The final year emphasises independent research, with students completing a supervised project that applies both sociological and criminological approaches to a topic of their choice. Advanced option modules cover areas such as criminal justice and mental disorder, hate crime, violence, forensic science, drugs and society, and extremism, enabling students to critically analyse complex social problems. Graduates leave with strong analytical, research, and practical skills, preparing them for careers in criminal justice, social research, policy, and the wider public and voluntary sectors where a deep understanding of crime, society, and social justice is essential.
