COURSE CURRICULUM

The Politics BA at Leicester provides a comprehensive exploration of political systems, theories, and practices at national and international levels. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through core modules covering political concepts, the structures of European and US politics, and introductory political analysis, while also choosing optional modules that examine international relations, the Cold War, and global economic power. The second year deepens understanding of political ideas, institutions, and global issues, with core modules focused on political parties and preparation for the final-year dissertation. Students expand their expertise through a range of optional modules covering topics such as international theory, global justice, European Union politics, conflict resolution, and the social, cultural, and historical dimensions of political processes. In the final year, students specialise further, selecting advanced modules on contemporary political challenges including foreign policy, human rights, political conflict, security studies, and public opinion, as well as thematic areas like feminism, environmental politics, and the politics of war, migration, and slavery. Throughout the degree, emphasis is placed on critical thinking, research skills, and independent analysis, allowing students to evaluate complex political issues and develop well-reasoned arguments. Graduates are prepared for careers in government, policy, journalism, research, and other fields requiring strong analytical and communication skills.
