COURSE CURRICULUM

The Media, Society and Culture BA at the University of Leicester provides an integrated study of media and sociology, allowing students to explore how societies develop, change, and interact with media. In the first year, students gain a foundation in key concepts and theories related to media, society, and social change, covering modules such as Introduction to Media and Communication, Sociology in Practice, Power, Privilege and Diversity, Society in Transformation, Global Media, and Creative Audiences. This first-year curriculum ensures a comprehensive understanding of the media-society relationship and the social forces that shape it. In the second year, students develop advanced skills in social research and media analysis, studying core modules including Live Sociology, Professionalism and Employment in the Media, Sociological Theory Explored, and Media Research in Practice, while choosing optional modules that align with their interests, from Political Communication and Identity and Popular Culture to Gender and Society and Environmental Sociologies. The final year allows for a highly personalized study, with students undertaking either a Dissertation in Media Studies or a Research Project combined with Real World Research. Optional modules enable students to focus on areas across media and sociology, such as Global Cultures, Media and Gender, Social Movements, Football and Society, and International Migration, preparing graduates for careers in media, research, policy, and beyond.
