COURSE CURRICULUM

The Media and Communication BA at the University of Leicester provides a thorough understanding of the theory, history, and practice of media across multiple platforms. In the first year, students explore foundational aspects of media, including its origins, global context, digital storytelling, creative audiences, and core concepts, developing both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The second year expands this foundation, focusing on news production and reporting, the democratic and political functions of media, emerging media technologies, and popular culture. Students also learn to conduct media research, examining content, organizations, and audiences, while having the opportunity to gain practical experience through modules such as documentary production. Core modules cover digital media, television studies, professional development, and media research, while options allow for specialization in areas like political communication, global film culture, and creative industry work. The final year emphasizes independent study and specialization, with students completing a dissertation of 8,000 to 10,000 words on a topic of their choice, supported by a wide range of optional modules. These include global cultures, media and the body, media rights, media and gender, advertising, public relations, celebrity and fan culture, and client-led media production.
