COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA in Journalism with Creative Writing at the University of Leicester integrates practical journalism training with the study and practice of creative writing, equipping students with versatile skills for a dynamic media landscape. In the first year, students develop foundational journalism skills in news-gathering, features production, and media ethics while exploring creative writing through modules on fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction, alongside a grounding in journalism history and theoretical concepts. The second year builds on these skills with advanced training in digital and social media journalism, data journalism, and storytelling, while students enhance their creative writing abilities through dedicated modules and optional courses in magazine, sports, or political journalism. In the final year, students undertake substantial publishing projects and a journalism dissertation, allowing them to consolidate their practical and analytical skills. Optional modules provide opportunities for specialized study in investigative journalism, entrepreneurial practice, broadcast journalism, creative writing forms such as prose fiction, screenwriting, humor, and transnational literature, as well as media law and ethics.
