COURSE CURRICULUM

The International Relations and History BA combines the study of historical processes with contemporary international politics, offering students a comprehensive understanding of global events and their historical roots. In the first year, students gain a foundation in history and international relations through core modules covering modern Britain, European developments from 1861 to 1991, key concepts in international relations, order and disorder since 1989, and major global events, with the opportunity to select options in comparative European politics or global economic power. The second year allows students to specialise and develop research skills, choosing modules related to historical inquiry, international theory, political ideas, and global politics, while options enable exploration of specific regions, gender and politics, empire and decolonisation, and contemporary security studies. Students prepare for their final year dissertation in either history or politics, depending on their focus. The final year provides maximum flexibility to pursue individual interests, with core dissertations supported by a wide range of optional modules addressing historical movements, human rights, global justice, political conflict, war, social change, and the evolution of power structures. Special subject modules allow in-depth exploration of topics such as the Nazi past, American political history, or antislavery movements, ensuring students develop advanced analytical, research, and critical thinking skills applicable to careers in policy, diplomacy, research, and international affairs.
