COURSE CURRICULUM

The Human Geography BA focuses on the social science dimensions of geography, combining human geography with complementary subjects such as Politics, Sociology, International Relations, and Modern Languages. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through core modules including Human Geography for a Globalised World, Skills for Professional Geographers, Environment/Nature/Society, the Human Geography Fieldcourse, and Working with Geographical Information. Optional modules allow exploration of international relations, sociology, and language learning. In the second year, students study key themes such as environmental justice, gentrification, and development politics, supported by research design and methods training, and an international field trip for practical experience. A diverse range of optional modules allows further specialisation in areas including social and cultural geography, economy and society, political geography, climate change, and environmental sociology, as well as continued language study. The final year emphasizes independent research, with students completing a dissertation under the supervision of an academic mentor, alongside optional modules tailored to individual interests. These may include contemporary environmental challenges, rural and digital geographies, migration, urban studies, health and wellbeing, information visualisation, and research communication. The degree develops strong analytical, research, and interdisciplinary skills, preparing graduates for careers in policy, planning, international development, environmental management, and other fields requiring nuanced understanding of human societies and spatial dynamics.
