COURSE CURRICULUM

The History and Politics BA at Leicester combines historical and political analysis to provide a deep understanding of global developments, social structures, and political systems. In the first year, students build a foundation through core modules covering medieval, early modern, and modern history, as well as European and global politics, political ideas, and US and British history. Optional modules allow further exploration of contemporary international relations and historical themes. The second year deepens students’ critical thinking, research, and analytical skills, with core modules supporting dissertation preparation in either history or politics. Students choose from a wide range of optional modules in history, politics, and international relations, covering topics such as dictatorship, race and protest, imperialism, gender and global politics, foreign policy, and European Union studies, allowing them to tailor their studies to personal interests. In the final year, students complete an independent dissertation and select five optional modules from history or politics, exploring advanced topics such as the Civil Rights Movement, US presidencies, war and society, feminism, parliamentary studies, Brexit, global justice, and political legacies of conflict. This flexible structure integrates historical insight with political analysis, developing strong research, critical thinking, and communication skills, and preparing graduates for careers in policy, research, government, international organisations, and related fields.
