COURSE CURRICULUM

The History and Archaeology BA combines historical study with archaeological practice, offering a comprehensive understanding of past societies and cultures. In the first year, students divide their time equally between history and archaeology, covering medieval, early modern and global history alongside the archaeological record from human origins to the present. Core modules introduce historical methods, archaeological theory, and fieldwork skills, with practical experience gained through local field schools at sites such as Bradgate Park and Burrough Hill. The second year allows students to tailor their degree through a wide range of history and archaeology option modules, covering topics such as environmental archaeology, artefact analysis, medieval urbanism, imperialism, race and protest, and contemporary environmental crises, while participating in research excavations that can take place internationally. In the final year, students focus on an independent dissertation in either history or archaeology, supported by advanced fieldwork, and select from a wide range of optional modules in both subjects. History options include topics such as the Civil Rights Movement, fashion and identity, war and society, and imperialism, while archaeology options cover human evolution, skeletal analysis, materials studies, conflict and heritage, and the archaeology of colonialism or Rome. This structure develops analytical, research, and practical skills, preparing students for careers in heritage, research, archaeology, and historical professions.
