COURSE CURRICULUM

The Film Studies BA at Leicester provides a comprehensive and flexible approach to the study of cinema, combining theory, history, and practical skills. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge in film and television history, learning to critically analyse different styles, techniques, and methods employed by directors and producers. Core modules cover American film and visual culture, film and art, and academic approaches to film and television, giving students the tools to appreciate cinema beyond a typical viewing experience. In the second year, students expand their understanding of global film traditions, exploring documentary, world cinemas, reception and consumption, and global animation. Practical skills are developed through modules in film production and independent research projects such as video essays, fostering both analytical and creative abilities. In the final year, students undertake a 10,000-word dissertation on a topic of their choice, allowing for in-depth research and critical engagement with their area of interest. A wide range of optional modules, including studies of Chinese cinema, American film, Hitchcock, and the cultural history of Star Wars, enable students to tailor their degree to their passions. The course equips graduates with critical, research, and creative skills, preparing them for careers in film, media, cultural industries, or further academic study.
