COURSE CURRICULUM

The Film Studies and English BA at Leicester provides an integrated approach to understanding literature and film, combining critical analysis, creative production, and historical study. In the first year, students acquire foundational knowledge in both disciplines, exploring key literary forms, styles of poetry, and prominent modes of film. Core modules include reading film, American film and visual culture, reading poetry, and writing matters, alongside options such as film and literature, feminist fiction, historical fiction, and literature for children and young adults. In the second year, the focus expands to national and transnational cinemas, practical film production, and critical theories in literature, with students undertaking projects such as short video production and an independent video essay. Core modules include film production, researching world cinemas, and critical perspectives, while optional modules allow deeper engagement with Gothic literature, modern and contemporary literature, and creative writing. The final year emphasizes independent research through dual dissertation tracks in film studies and English, alongside a wide selection of optional modules to tailor learning to individual interests. Students can study areas such as Renaissance and Victorian literature, contemporary film movements, literatures of protest, and genre studies, while developing advanced skills in analysis, research, and creative practice, preparing them for careers in media, publishing, education, and creative industries.
