COURSE CURRICULUM

The Film and Media Studies BA at Leicester provides students with a comprehensive understanding of film, media, and their cultural, social, and historical contexts. In the first year, students are introduced to the fundamentals of film analysis, media consumption, and audience engagement through modules such as Reading Film, Digital Storytelling, American Film and Visual Culture, Global Media, Media Origins, and Creative Audiences. This foundation equips students with critical thinking and analytical skills to evaluate how media shapes and reflects society. In the second year, students gain hands-on practical experience by creating a short film collaboratively, while also studying the ways media outlets communicate with audiences. Modules in Researching World Cinemas, Film Production, Digital Media and Everyday Life, Independent Research Project: Video Essay, and Television Studies further develop both practical and theoretical expertise. In the final year, students focus on independent research through a compulsory 10,000-word dissertation and have the flexibility to tailor their studies to their interests by choosing from a wide range of optional modules, including New Chinese Cinemas, Women in Hollywood, Film and Social Change, Global Cultures, Media and the Body, Star Wars: A Cultural History, Hitchcock and Film History, Media, Celebrity and Fan Culture, and more. This degree equips students with the skills necessary for careers in media production, journalism, cultural industries, and research, combining analytical, creative, and practical competencies.
