COURSE CURRICULUM

The English BA at Leicester provides a structured and flexible program that develops students’ knowledge and skills across literature and language studies. In the first year, students build foundational expertise, learning to analyse poetry, prose, drama, and language, while exploring the development of the novel and the richness of Renaissance drama. Core modules are complemented by options in creative writing, film and literature, feminist fiction, historical fiction, or literature for children and young adults. In the second year, students expand their understanding of medieval and early modern literature and engage with critical and theoretical movements that have shaped contemporary literary studies. Options allow exploration of Romantic and eighteenth-century literature, gothic texts, modern and contemporary literature, global voices, creative writing, publishing, education, and diversity in American literature, enabling students to develop specialist knowledge and enhance employability. The final year allows students to focus on advanced literary study and independent research, culminating in a dissertation on a self-chosen topic. Students can explore texts from the Romantic period to contemporary global literature, and select from a wide range of option modules including Renaissance and Victorian literature, science fiction, classical worlds, literatures of protest, weird fiction, and writing-focused modules. The degree equips graduates with analytical, research, and communication skills for careers in education, publishing, creative industries, and beyond.
