COURSE CURRICULUM

This degree offers a structured and balanced study of Ancient History and History, beginning with a first year that establishes core foundations in Greek and Roman history alongside medieval to modern historical approaches. Students explore ancient evidence, key historical transitions and major political, cultural and social developments through a mix of compulsory and optional modules. In the second year, the program becomes more flexible, allowing students to tailor their learning through a wide range of option modules spanning ancient empires, medieval societies, modern global histories and thematic topics such as dictatorship, race, protest and environmental change. Core training in historical methods and ancient source analysis prepares students for independent research, while an additional research skills module is required for those planning a History-focused dissertation. In the final year, students complete a dissertation in either Ancient History or History and choose from advanced modules and special subjects that offer deep engagement with specific periods, regions and themes such as Greek monuments, Roman society, antislavery movements, civil rights, migration, gender, crime and global conflict. Across all years, the course provides a rich and varied pathway for understanding long-term human experiences and developing strong analytical, interpretive and research skills.
