ABOUT UNIVERSITY

The University of Leicester is a public research university located in Leicester, England, with its main campus situated south of the city centre next to Victoria Park. Established formally as a university in 1957, it evolved from University College, Leicester, which began in 1921 following decades of community advocacy for higher education in the region. The university originated as a memorial to those who served in the First World War, heavily supported by local philanthropist Thomas Fielding Johnson, who donated land and buildings for its foundation. Early academic efforts focused on teacher training and external degrees from the University of London, while student numbers steadily grew in the mid-twentieth century. Over time, the institution expanded its academic offerings, merged with adult education initiatives, and appointed notable principals such as Frederick Attenborough. The university gained recognition for significant scientific achievements, most famously the invention of genetic fingerprinting and its role in the discovery and DNA identification of King Richard III’s remains in 2012. The medical school opened in 1971, and the university earned acclaim through awards such as the Queen’s Anniversary Prize in 1994 for excellence in physics and astronomy. Additional developments include participation in high-performance computing initiatives and involvement in archaeological and historical research projects of international interest. With a recorded income of £384.6 million in 2023–24, including substantial research funding, the university remains academically active despite facing internal challenges. Recent years have seen staff concerns over proposed redundancies, resulting in a no-confidence vote in 2021 and calls by the academic union for a boycott. Public interest moments, such as physics students modeling a hypothetical zombie apocalypse, have also brought national attention to the institution.
