COURSE CURRICULUM

The Transport Planning and the Environment MSc equips students with the knowledge and skills to address the environmental and societal impacts of transport while developing sustainable and efficient transport systems. The program covers key areas including environmental science, air quality policy design, transport modelling, data collection and analysis, and future transport system planning. Students gain practical experience through interdisciplinary group projects, applying theoretical concepts to real-world problems such as designing park and ride sites, train stations, or city squares. The course also emphasizes understanding the interactions between transport systems, human behaviour, and environmental outcomes, enabling students to design solutions that are socially and environmentally responsible. The dissertation provides an opportunity to conduct independent research on a chosen topic, often supported by industry partners, fostering skills in evidence-based analysis, research, and communication. Optional modules expand learning into areas such as sustainable spatial planning, public transport management, green logistics, traffic management, system dynamics, railway and transport investment appraisal, transport data science, choice modelling, and global transport policy transfer. The program prepares graduates for careers in transport planning, environmental consultancy, policy-making, urban development, and related fields, equipping them to make informed decisions that enhance sustainability, safety, and wellbeing in cities while addressing contemporary global transport challenges.
