COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sustainable Food Systems and Food Security MSc provides a comprehensive understanding of the complexities and challenges of creating resilient, ethical, and sustainable food systems. The program begins with an introduction to sustainable food systems, using systems thinking to examine pressing global issues such as food security, malnutrition, obesity, climate change, and food justice. Students then explore sustainable food consumption, integrating perspectives from psychology, nutrition, public health, sustainability, geography, and sociology to understand the drivers and impacts of dietary choices. The course also addresses sustainable food supply chains and trade, focusing on sourcing strategies and linking production to consumption for better sustainability outcomes. Experiential learning is a key feature, including field trips to local, regional, and global food production and consumption sites, providing practical insight into the interconnected environmental, social, and economic aspects of food systems. Students develop research methods and analytical skills tailored to sustainability studies and examine sustainable food production practices and their role in meeting global food security targets. The program culminates in a research project, where students investigate real-world challenges in food system sustainability, often with opportunities for collaboration and co-supervision. Through a combination of theoretical, practical, and field-based learning, graduates are prepared to address complex food system issues and contribute to sustainable and secure food futures globally.
