COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sustainable Cities MSc provides students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience needed to address complex urban sustainability challenges. The course begins with an introduction to critical debates in sustainability, urban systems, and cities, exploring a variety of approaches to achieve system changes. Students gain research skills through a focus on epistemology, data analysis, and action research methods, preparing them for change-focused work in urban environments. Core modules examine key city systems, including energy, sustainable housing, mobility, and urban ecosystems, allowing students to understand the social, environmental, and economic impacts of these systems and develop strategies for sustainable transformation. Through practical design challenges and applied projects, students learn to assess and plan urban energy networks, create low-impact housing solutions, and integrate urban green spaces and ecosystems to improve quality of life. A central element of the program is the Sustainability Research Project, where students independently investigate a real-world urban problem under academic supervision. This project enables students to link prior learning across city systems to produce original research, addressing topics such as low-carbon housing developments, electric vehicle integration, urban biomass production, and regional climate strategies. The MSc equips graduates with interdisciplinary knowledge, analytical skills, and practical experience to become effective leaders in sustainable urban development.
