COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sustainability, Environment and Development MSc equips students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience to address complex challenges at the intersection of environmental, social, and economic development. The program covers global inequalities and development, examining how economic, social, and political disparities shape development outcomes, including issues of poverty, education, health, gender, and the environment. Students gain a strong foundation in sustainability, environment, and development through modules on theoretical perspectives, environmental politics, policy, and governance, with a focus on critically evaluating mainstream approaches and understanding multi-level policy and governance processes. Professional skills are developed through training in communications, proposal writing, project management, policy analysis, and cultural sensitivity, preparing students for diverse career paths. A key feature of the program is the field course, which provides experiential learning by linking academic, community, and stakeholder perspectives, emphasising participatory methodologies and ethical, just, and context-specific approaches to development, often in rural or international settings. Students also develop research skills in quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method approaches, culminating in a substantial research project where they apply their learning to investigate a topic of interest, producing a research paper and dissemination outputs, while honing transferable skills such as independent working, critical analysis, and time management, preparing them for careers in academia, industry, or the public sector.
