COURSE CURRICULUM

The first year of the Political Science MSc combines core and optional modules to provide a comprehensive foundation in both theoretical understanding and practical research skills. Compulsory modules include Analysing Data in Political Science, which equips students with essential quantitative and qualitative techniques to interpret political data effectively, and Data Collection in Political Science, focusing on research design, survey methods, and fieldwork approaches necessary for robust empirical investigation. The Research Dissertation in Political Science, a 60-credit module, allows students to apply their knowledge independently, undertaking a substantial research project that develops analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. In addition to these core modules, students can choose from a range of optional modules tailored to specific interests. These options include Gender, Globalisation and Development, Counterterrorism, Terrorism, Research and Project Skills through Experiential Learning, Diplomatic Practice, and Global Governance, providing opportunities to explore contemporary political issues, international relations, and specialised policy areas. Together, the combination of compulsory and optional modules ensures that students gain a strong grounding in research methodology, data analysis, and critical thinking, while also engaging with pressing global and political challenges. This structure prepares graduates for professional careers in government, international organisations, NGOs, and media, as well as for further academic research and doctoral study in political science.
