COURSE CURRICULUM

The Plant Science and Biotechnology MSc is structured over three semesters to combine theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and independent research. In the first semester, students undertake a Practical Bioinformatics module, gaining hands-on experience with tools and methods for analyzing sequence information, which is essential for modern plant science research. Alongside this, the Research Planning and Communication module develops transferable skills such as literature searching, critical analysis of research papers, writing literature reviews, and preparing grant proposals. A double-weighted Sustainable Crop Production module examines drivers of change in food and agricultural systems, addressing global and UK food security and climate adaptation. In the second semester, the Advanced Biomolecular Technologies module provides a theoretical foundation for a range of modern molecular biology and protein engineering techniques and develops skills in data analysis and interpretation. Students apply these methods in a laboratory-based mini-project, gaining practical experience in techniques such as gene cloning, PCR, mutagenesis, protein expression, and purification. The Crop Science and Biotechnology module, also double-weighted, explores advanced plant breeding, genome engineering, and strategies for sustainable crop production. In the final semester, students complete an independent research project under the guidance of a supervisor, integrating theoretical knowledge and practical skills, with training in experimental design, advanced techniques, data analysis, and interpretation, preparing them for careers in plant science and biotechnology.
