COURSE CURRICULUM

The Year 1 Oral Surgery MSc program at Leeds is designed to provide a comprehensive foundation in clinical practice, research, and professional development. All modules are compulsory and focus on equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to practice safely and effectively. The Clinical Practice of Oral Surgery module develops students’ technical, diagnostic, and communication skills, addressing surgical complications, medical co-morbidities, and management of complex oro-facial conditions. Dental Radiology covers the safe use of 2D and 3D imaging modalities, including Cone Beam CT and MRI, for diagnosis in the dental and maxillofacial region. The Medical Emergencies module prepares students to manage urgent situations in the dental setting, combining theory, practical skills, and reflective learning. Audit and Service Improvement teaches clinical audit and service evaluation, guiding students on planning, data collection, analysis, and implementing change to enhance patient care. Research Methods, Ethics and Statistics provides essential training in project management, literature review, ethical considerations, and statistical analysis, supporting evidence-based practice. The Individual Project enables students to undertake independent research, producing a dissertation that integrates skills from the program, including literature appraisal, methodology, data interpretation, and ethical practice. Together, these modules ensure students develop clinical expertise, research competence, and professional confidence necessary for advanced oral surgery practice and future academic or clinical leadership.
