The Mathematics MSc offers a blend of advanced learning and independent research, centred around a 60-credit dissertation that allows you to explore a mathematical topic in depth with guidance from an academic supervisor. Past projects have covered areas such as cluster algebras, nonstandard analysis, combustion waves and planetary motion in general relativity, reflecting the wide scope available. Alongside the dissertation, you can choose from a range of optional modules that span both pure and applied mathematics. These include foundational and theoretical areas such as models and sets, topology, Riemannian geometry, algebras and representations, and classical and quantum Hamiltonian systems. You can also focus on analytical and computational topics through modules like functional analysis, advanced mathematical methods, astrophysical and geophysical fluid dynamics, statistical computing and statistical theory. This flexible structure allows you to tailor the course to your interests, whether you want to deepen your understanding of pure mathematical structures or apply mathematical techniques to real-world physical and statistical problems.
