COURSE CURRICULUM

The compulsory modules in this program provide a comprehensive understanding of how materials are designed, processed and evaluated for advanced engineering applications. You’ll study phase transformations and microstructural control to understand how processing influences material behaviour, alongside core principles of structure-property relationships. Modules in materials selection and failure analysis teach you how to choose suitable materials for specific applications and investigate failures in service. You’ll gain strong skills in characterisation through detailed study of material structures across multiple scales. The course also covers specialised areas, including materials for electronic applications, nanomaterials, metals and alloys, and ceramics, polymers and composites, giving you a broad insight into both traditional and emerging material classes. A major part of the program is the 60-credit research project, beginning in semester two and continuing through the summer. This project allows you to apply your knowledge to a real-world problem, develop independent research skills and work with advanced laboratory facilities. Recent project topics include microstructure development in drop-tube processed cast iron, cooling rate model validation and the characterisation of graphite nanoplatelets. Overall, the modules equip you with strong theoretical grounding, practical abilities and analytical skills needed for careers in materials science and engineering.
