COURSE CURRICULUM

The Health Research MSc is designed to provide students with comprehensive skills and knowledge for applied health and social care research. The program equips students to design, conduct, and critically evaluate high-quality studies across quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods approaches. Core modules include Getting Started in Health Research, which introduces study design, research ethics, stakeholder engagement, and dissemination, and Capturing and Handling Data in Research, which focuses on data collection, analysis, and critical appraisal. Analytic Research covers cross-sectional, case-control, and cohort studies, emphasising comparative statistics, bias, and confounding, while Intervention Research introduces clinical trials, systematic reviews, and health economics. The Health Research Project allows students to undertake a supervised research study, producing outputs in the style of a journal article. Optional modules provide further specialization, including Statistical Methods in Health Research, Systematic Reviews of Research, Clinical Trials Research, Applied Qualitative Health Research, Introduction to Health Economics, Informatics and Data Science in Health Care and Research, and Foundations of Health Data. These options enable students to deepen understanding of statistical modelling, evidence synthesis, qualitative methods, economic evaluation, and health informatics. The MSc combines practical training with theoretical foundations, preparing graduates for careers in applied health research, policy development, healthcare evaluation, and further academic study, while fostering the ability to critically assess and generate evidence to improve health outcomes.
