COURSE CURRICULUM

The Environmental Science MSc provides a comprehensive and flexible curriculum that equips students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills to address complex environmental challenges. Core modules include Scientific Quality and Discourse, which develops skills in communicating scientific ideas effectively across audiences through written, graphical, and verbal formats, and Advanced Data Analysis and Visualisation, which introduces Python programming and data manipulation techniques for environmental datasets. The Environmental Science Practice module emphasizes hands-on learning through fieldwork and case studies, enabling students to understand the interaction between natural processes and human systems. The program culminates in a substantial Environmental Science Research Project, allowing students to design and execute independent research, whether through field data collection, lab work, database analysis, or policy-focused technical reports, while developing transferable skills in analysis, time management, and project organisation. Optional modules and pathways offer the opportunity to specialise further, with courses in Environmental Systems and Modelling covering machine learning, climate and ocean processes, biogeochemical cycles, and terrestrial biosphere interactions, as well as applied modules in air pollution science, sustainable groundwater management, and environmental policy. The combination of core and optional modules ensures students gain advanced expertise in environmental science, preparing them for careers in research, consultancy, policy, and industry, or for further academic study.
