COURSE CURRICULUM

The Engineering Geology MSc at Leeds provides a comprehensive foundation in understanding and managing geological processes for engineering and environmental applications. Students develop expertise in characterising the ground through field and laboratory investigations, creating geological and geotechnical models to support planning and design. The program covers core areas such as soil mechanics, foundation engineering, and rock engineering, enabling students to analyse stress, strain, strength, and failure in soils and rock, and apply this knowledge to practical geotechnical and structural problems. Hydrogeology and contaminant processes are also addressed, focusing on groundwater flow, aquifer properties, and contaminated land assessment and remediation. The course introduces students to hazards, resilience, and sustainable engineering, examining geological risks such as landslides, climate impacts, and strategies to mitigate their effects in technical and economic contexts. A central component of the MSc is the independent dissertation project, which runs from April to August and allows students to apply their learning to real-world problems. Many projects involve collaboration with industry, combining laboratory and fieldwork to tackle complex challenges. Through this blend of theoretical instruction, practical training, and research experience, graduates gain the skills and knowledge required for careers in civil engineering, environmental consulting, infrastructure development, and geoscience, ready to address both technical and societal challenges in the field.
